A painkiller that didn't exist
A team of researchers from MIT and Stanford — Rebecca Waber, Baba Shiv, Ziv Carmon and Dan Ariely — invented a drug from scratch: Veladone-Rx. They recruited volunteers, sat them in a waiting room staged like a real medical office, and handed them a leaflet describing a revolutionary painkiller, citing clinical studies claiming a 92% pain improvement rate in just 10 minutes.

The one detail that differed between the two groups
Every participant received exactly the same pill, with no real active ingredient at all. The only difference was one line on the leaflet: one group was told the treatment cost $2.50 per dose. The other group was told it cost 10 cents. Afterward, everyone received small electric shocks to measure their perceived pain before and after taking the pill.

Nadie mintió a propósito.

The result no participant could explain
In the group that believed they'd paid $2.50, 85% experienced a real, measurable reduction in pain. In the group that believed they'd paid 10 cents, only 61% reported improvement. Nobody lied on purpose. Nobody faked feeling less pain to please the researcher. The brain literally processed less pain when it believed the treatment cost more.

Not an isolated lab curiosity
A similar study at the University of Iowa found the same pattern outside the lab: students who bought cold medicine at full price reported better results than those who bought the exact same medicine at a discounted price. Price doesn't just communicate value before the purchase. It keeps acting after, while the product is actually being used.

What this means for anyone selling something
It's tempting to read this as permission to inflate prices for no reason. That's not it. It's something more uncomfortable: the price you set isn't just a number covering costs and margin. It's information your customer uses, unconsciously, to decide how much value they're about to experience. Underpricing out of fear of not selling doesn't just cut your margin — it can literally reduce how much value the buyer perceives. And it doesn't work the other way indefinitely: if the product doesn't deliver, no high price sustains that illusion for long. Price amplifies a real experience. It doesn't invent one out of nothing.
