En 1770, el inventor húngaro Wolfgang von Kempelen presentó ante la emperatriz María Teresa de Austria un autómata vestido con túnica y turbante otomanos, sentado frente a un tablero de ajedrez sobre un mueble de madera. Se le conoció como "El Turco". Kempelen lo hacía funcionar tras abrir, uno a uno, los compartimentos del mueble, mostrando un intrincado laberinto de engranajes que parecía demostrar que no había ningún truco a la vista.

An invention meant to impress an empress
In 1770, Hungarian inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen presented an automaton dressed in Ottoman robes and a turban, seated in front of a chessboard atop a wooden cabinet, to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. It became known as "The Turk." Kempelen operated it by opening, one by one, the cabinet's compartments, revealing an intricate maze of gears that seemed to prove there was no trick in sight.

A machine that really played, and won
What was astonishing about The Turk wasn't just its appearance: it played complete, competitive chess games against real human opponents, and even solved the "knight's tour," a puzzle where the piece must visit every square on the board exactly once. During its 70 years touring Europe and America, it defeated Benjamin Franklin, Catherine the Great of Russia, and in 1809, at Schönbrunn Palace, Napoleon Bonaparte himself.

The game that revealed its temper
In that game against Napoleon, the French emperor tried, deliberately or not, an illegal move to test the machine. The Turk responded by removing the misplaced piece. Napoleon tried again, and this time the automaton reacted by sweeping every piece off the board with its arm, furious. It was one of many anecdotes that fed the myth that the machine didn't just play chess — it seemed to have a personality of its own.

The trick nobody could prove for decades
The secret, of course, was far less mysterious: a chess master, hidden inside the cabinet through a system of mirrors and sliding compartments, operated the pieces manually while Kempelen — and later its buyer, Johann Maelzel — showed the interior in a controlled way to give the false impression that there was no room to hide anyone. Over its lifetime, an estimated at least 15 different chess masters operated the machine from inside, across different periods and cities.

Why its name still lives on in today's technology
The Turk wasn't the first or last case of "artificial intelligence" faked by hidden human hands — Amazon named its on-demand labor platform Amazon Mechanical Turk in its honor, where thousands of people perform tasks algorithms still can't handle alone, often without the end user knowing. The story repeats with uncomfortable regularity: when something seems too intelligent to be true, there's usually a very human reason behind it, carefully hidden from view.
