A goldsmith solving a problem that wasn't his

Johannes Gutenberg wasn't a writer, a monk, or a scholar — he was a goldsmith. His trade was working metal with precision, and that's exactly the problem he ended up solving. He adapted a wine press, perfected an unusually dense ink, and cast movable metal type that could be combined, reused, and aligned with exactness. He didn't invent paper, ink, or the press — he combined three existing technologies into one system.

Before 1455, copying a book took months

Until then, every book was copied by hand, letter by letter, usually by monks in monasteries. A Paris bookseller in the early 15th century considered it an achievement to offer 300 manuscript copies to an entire university. Books were luxury objects, reserved almost entirely for the Church and the nobility. Knowledge didn't circulate — it was kept.

The speed that changed the scale of the problem

The Gutenberg Bible, finished around 1455, took three years to print using four presses running in parallel — and it was still radically faster than copying it by hand. But that first Bible wasn't the decisive part. What happened next was. In barely 20 years, there were already a dozen print shops across Europe. Within 50 years, that number had multiplied a hundredfold.

The numbers by the year 1500

By 1500, Europe had roughly 260 locations with around 1,120 print shops, which in four decades had published close to 30,000 distinct works and produced more than 20 million copies. That's a staggering figure for a technology that, 45 years earlier, didn't exist at all — going from zero to 20 million copies in under two generations.

A detail close to home

In Valencia, the printing press arrived early: a workshop was already operating by 1473, and in 1490 "Tirant lo Blanch" — one of the most important chivalric novels in European literature — was printed there. In barely 17 years, the city went from having zero printed books to producing a work still studied in universities across the world today.

What really scaled wasn't the paper

What the printing press multiplied wasn't just book copies — it was access to ideas that had previously depended on the permission of whoever guarded them. When the cost of reproducing an idea dropped, the Church and the monarchies lost exclusive control over what circulated. The Renaissance, the Reformation and much of modern science didn't happen despite the printing press — they happened because it existed. The lesson hasn't aged: when someone solves the distribution bottleneck for something, it doesn't just change that product. It changes who holds power.
