A mutiny with no way back

On April 28, 1789, a group of crew members aboard the British ship HMS Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian, mutinied against their captain and seized control of the vessel. After a stay in Tahiti, nine of the mutineers, along with a group of Tahitian men and women, sought a place remote enough that British justice would never find them. In January 1790, they arrived at Pitcairn Island, deep in the South Pacific. Upon landing, they dismantled the Bounty and burned what remained of it in the bay — a deliberate act to eliminate any chance of escape or discovery.

A decade that reduced nine men to one

The years that followed were extremely violent. Disputes among the mutineers — over control of the small settlement and over the Tahitian women who accompanied them — spiraled into alcohol, violence and death. One committed suicide, another was killed after trying to murder the entire community, and several more died in confrontations or from illness. By the year 1800, barely a decade after arriving, only one mutineer was still alive: John Adams.

The turn toward peace, led by the sole survivor

Adams, the last living mutineer, found a Bible among the wreckage of the Bounty and, according to the island's chronicles, that discovery marked a radical shift in how he led the small community. He returned to religion, taught the children to read using that same Bible, and guided the group — by then made up of Tahitian women and children born on the island — toward stable, peaceful coexistence rooted in Christian principles. The community's existence remained completely unknown to the rest of the world until 1808, when an American ship arrived by chance.

A forgotten pioneer in the history of the vote

One of the lesser-known facts about Pitcairn is that, in 1838, the island granted women the right to vote on equal terms with men — decades before the vast majority of countries in the world, including nations routinely cited today as pioneers of women's suffrage. It was also one of the earliest territories to establish a democratic system for electing its own leaders, within a community of just a few dozen people.

From 233 residents to under 50

Pitcairn's population reached its historical peak in 1937, at 233 residents. Since then, steady emigration — mostly to New Zealand, in search of better educational and job opportunities — has reduced the community to somewhere between 35 and 50 people today, spread across a handful of family surnames tracing directly back to the original mutineers: Christian, Young, Warren, Brown. It remains, by a wide margin, the least populated political subdivision on the planet.

Aislamiento real, no metafórico

Real isolation, not a figure of speech

Pitcairn has no airport, and the island only receives a scheduled supply ship a few times a year. Getting there means first flying to Tahiti, then to Mangareva — in French Polynesia's remote Gambier Islands — and from there completing several days at sea. It remains, eleven generations after the original mutiny, one of the hardest-to-reach inhabited communities on the entire planet — and its current residents remain, genetically confirmed through DNA analysis, direct descendants of those nine men who chose to burn their own ship so there would be no turning back.
